Vivian Purkhiser Obituary

Vivian Eileen Purkhiser, 88, of Niles, formerly of Cassopolis, died peacefully in her residence, early Monday morning, March 4, 2024.

Her life began May 11, 1935 in Richmond, Indiana, born to Harold and Edna Snyder.

She married Edwin Dale Purkhiser August 21, 1960 in Richmond, Indiana.  E. Dale and Vivian were blessed with three children from this union.  After forty-one years of marriage, he preceded her in death in 2002.

Vivian was well known in Cass County and surrounding areas for her artwork.  Before graduating from Richmond High School, she was awarded a full four-year scholarship to Dayton Art Institute.  While raising three children and assisting Dale with a busy farm, she was always connected to her art.  Whenever possible she traveled to many parts of the globe taking pictures for inspiration.  Vivian has been featured in many shows throughout the years, including Fernwood Botanical Gardens and at the Council on Aging. She is responsible for the creation of the currently used Cass County Seal.  The Cass County Board of Commissioners hosted a public recognition for her work on the seal and her donation of an art collection to be displayed in the administration building.  Vivian was a long-standing member of the Cassopolis United Presbyterian Church, where she served in many capacities throughout the years, including as an ordained deacon and ordained elder.

Vivian will be greatly missed by family and friends.  She is survived by her daughter, Karen Lynn Purkhiser of South Bend, Indiana; cousins, Mike Brown of Fairborn, Ohio, Carolyn (Scott) Barker of Bear Creek, Ohio, Terry Slonaker of Harrison, Ohio, and Steve (Lisa) Slonaker of Centerville, Indiana.

In addition to her husband, E. Dale Purkhiser, she was preceded in death by two sons, Lance A. Purkhiser and Ty B. Purkhiser.

Family and friends will gather Saturday, March 16, 2024, from 12:00 noon until time of service at 1:00 p.m. in Cassopolis United Presbyterian Church, 209 East State Street, Cassopolis.

Vivian will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband and sons in Youngs Prairie Cemetery in Penn Township.
