Richard A. Mays Sr., 75, of Cassopolis, died peacefully, Sunday morning, March 31, 2024.
His life began October 13, 1948 in South Bend Indiana, the third of four children born to William Edwin and Velma Louise Mays. He married Namiko Hagiwara in Japan on May 28, 1970.
He also enjoyed rope making, creating fancy knotwork, military history and tinkering with anything electronic. Richard was stationed in Atsugi Naval Base when he taught Japanese to new military arrivals. He started in the United States Airforce from 1968-1978 and served in the United States Navy from 1978-1988, retiring from the United States Navy in 1988. He also retired as a military contractor at the Fallon Naval Air Station in 2016.
Richard will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, his son, Richard (Mary) Mays Jr. of Oakland Tennessee; brother, David Clark (Suzzane) Mays of Cassopolis; three grandsons, William Mays, Christian Mays, Connor Mays; granddaughters, Shirley Mays, Mariah Mays, Vivian Blair; and niece, Elizabeth Mays and nephew, David W. Mays.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, William Edwin and Harold Earl Mays.
Family and friends will gather on Friday, April 5, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Wagner Family Funerals Connelly Chapel, 202 North Broadway Street, Cassopolis Michigan.
