Raymond "Zip" Bruens Obituary

Raymond Eugene “Zip” Bruens, 91, died peacefully Friday, January 26, 2024 in the comfort of family’s presence.

His life began July 13, 1932 in Volinia Township, Michigan, one of eleven children of Arthur and Laura Bruens.  He married Doris Ellen Ackerman July 18, 1959 in South Bend, Indiana.  After forty-two years of marriage, she preceded him in death in 2001.

In high school Zip played football for the Cassopolis Rangers in ’47,’48’ and ’49 as an offensive lineman and was a starter the last two years.  Zip served honorably and proudly in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955, including service aboard the battleship USS Wisconsin.  He was a lifetime member of Marcellus VFW Post 4054 and served on the Honor Guard.  He was also a member of the American Legion Posts in Edwardsburg, Michigan and Bristol, Indiana, the Eagles in Niles, Moose Lodge 933 in Dowagiac.  Zip was Past Seam Squirrel of Michigan #43 of the Cooties.

Zip had his own business for over forty years laying carpet.  When not attending ballgames and events for his grandkids and great grandkids, he stayed active bowling, dancing, playing cards, going to the casino and, of course, rooting for Notre Dame.  He enjoyed decorating for the season and liked to walk his dog, Scooter.

Zip will be greatly missed by family and friends.  He is survived by four daughters, Karen (James) Smith, Janice Knapp, Laura Keesler, Kacie (Jimmy) Leach; four sons, Michael (Nancy) Knapp, Wilson “Butch” Wheatley, Dale (Sandy) Bruens, Don Bruens, twenty grandchildren; thirty-six great grandchildren; several great great grandchildren; two sisters, Loretta Smith, Kay Bruens; one brother, Gordon Bruens; host of nieces and nephews; and his longtime companion, Esther Morey and her children, Susan Frost and George VanScoyk.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Bruens; one son, Dick Bruens; two grandsons, Richard Bruens, Jr., Jason Keesler; four sisters, Velma Bradley, Alta Dokey, Cleo Findley, Rose Williams, three brothers, Lloyd Hilgendorf, Arthur Bruens, Merle Bruens; one daughter-in-law, Debbie Bruens; one brother-in-law, Barney Smith; and Esther’s daughter, Penny O’Neill; granddaughter, Misty Frost; and grandson, William Gibson.
