Mitchell Huizenga Obituary

Mitchell James “Mickey” Huizenga, 70, of Dowagiac, died peacefully Tuesday, September 10, 2024.

His life began June 22, 1954, the youngest of four children born to Leonard and Ruth Huizenga.

Mickey enjoyed tinkering and building things. He very much liked trains big and small, from train shows to model train sets. His main set of wheels was a bike, and he enjoyed riding everywhere. While he didn't get to do it too often, he enjoyed fishing. Mickey loved the season of winter and looked forward to the snow. His kids will remember relaxing and playing Nintendo with their dad. He also loved to play pool and tried to have a pool table wherever he lived.  He said his favorite animal was the owl. He always used to dislike cats, but the irony is, his buddy at the end was his cat named Prince. Mickey was a kid at heart and enjoyed cartoons and fantasy movies. Everyone has had good things to say about him and that it's too bad he is gone.

Mickey will be greatly missed by family and friends.  He is survived by daughter, Jennifer (Michael Hemenway) Huizenga of Dowagiac; son, Norman (Alicia) Huizenga of Fennville; grandchildren, Damien McNary of Dowagiac, Noah; sisters, Joan Beneke of Dowagiac, Barbara (John) O’Connell of Niles; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert “Bobby” Huizenga.

The family will observe a private remembrance.
