Lonnie was a great athlete, running track, playing football and basketball in high school before graduating from Dowagiac Union High School in 1956.   He held numerous athletic records and then went on to box in the Navy, where he served twenty years as a hospital corpsman before retiring in 1975.  After that, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University teaching second and seventh grades for 15 years for Dowagiac Public Schools. He loved sports, catching the largest bass in the lake and winning golf tournaments.  He was a man of few words, but when he spoke, we listened. Lonnie loved his family and will be greatly missed.
