Judith Torbet Obituary

Judith Elaine Torbet, 77, of Cassopolis, died peacefully Saturday, March 28, 2026 in the comfort of her family’s presence.

Her life began February 27, 1949 in Dowagiac, Michigan the second youngest of six children born to Clifford and Marvel DeGraff.

She had a spirit that was both adventurous and deeply rooted in the simple joys of life. An avid mushroom hunter, she could spot morels like hidden treasure—often better than anyone else—and there was nothing she loved more than being outdoors, whether fishing, camping, or spending time in Northern Michigan, where she felt most at peace. Her home on Priest lake in Sister Lakes was especially dear to her, a place filled with memories, laughter, and the people she loved most.

She had a sharp wit and a natural gift for storytelling, often sharing tales—especially about her grandchildren and great grandchildren—with anyone willing to listen. Music was almost always playing when you walked into her home, and she had a way of truly listening—often pointing out meaningful lyrics or lines that stuck with her. It was part of what made her such a thoughtful observer of life, and likely what inspired her love of writing poetry, where she could put her own thoughts and feelings into words. She loved a good joke and was just as quick to tell one as she was to laugh, bringing lightness and joy wherever she went. She was incredibly proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought her endless joy and were among her greatest blessings.

She also had a competitive streak and a keen mind, which made her a formidable poker player at the Moose Lodge in Elkhart, Indiana. She took pride in her memory and her ability to keep up with anyone at the table—and often outplayed them. Just as meaningful to her were the friendships she built around those tables, cherishing the time, laughter, and connections she shared with the people she played cards with in Elkhart.

She enjoyed keeping up with the weather in Las Vegas, a place she loved to visit, always looking forward to her next trip and likely keeping a closer eye on the forecast than most locals. No matter where she was, she carried herself with care and took pride in always being well put together.

A close loved one once said that if a life could be measured by how your children turn out, Judy did an exceptional job—and her children prove that every day. It’s a reflection of the love, strength, and values she carried with her throughout her life.

Above all, she cherished her family and friends deeply. Her warmth, humor, and love will be remembered by all who knew her.

Judy will be greatly missed by family and friends.  She is survived by daughters, Krin (Darby) Smith of Dowagiac, Darcy Bornas of Lawton; sons, James (Jen) Torbet of Dowagiac, Robert (Brie) Torbet of Elkhart; stepson, Kory (Carmen) Torbet of Homer; son-in-law, Douglas Bornas of Lawton; grandchildren, Brooke (Daniel) Thomas of Dowagiac, Brittany (Brandon) Villarreal of Lincoln, Nebraska, Thomas Smith of Dowagiac, Brennan Bornas, Brady Bornas, Brenden Bornas, all of Lawton, Sara Torbet, Jillian Torbet, both of Dowagiac, Lanie Mattix-Gist, Rheana Mattix-Gist, both of Dowagiac; Zoe Torbet of Elkhart, Davis Torbet, Elease Torbet, both of Homer; great grandchildren, Harper, Landon; brother, Larry (Susan) DeGraff of Niles; and a host of nieces and nephews.
