Esther Pauline Walters, 87, of East Point, Kentucky, died peacefully, Wednesday, February 14, 2024, in the presence of her family.

Her life began January 9, 1937, in Indianapolis, Indiana, born to the Reverend Charles Clifford and Audrey Deckard. She married Paul D. Walters, October 18, 1960, in Corinth, Mississippi.  From this union, they were blessed with and raised seven children.

If is difficult to summarize a life so well lived in just a few sentences. Esther was first a devoted follower of Jesus Christ and did all she could to share the love of Christ with everyone that she encountered. As a child, she watched her parents build churches and continued in that mission by being a help through service in every church she attended. Whether she was sending a note of encouragement, leading ladies ministries, teaching Sunday School, making meals, watching children or praying, Esther’s life was spent in service to those around her. Her greatest desire and prayer were that her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews would love Jesus and follow Him devotedly. Family was very important to Esther. She cherished spending time with her children and especially her grandchildren. She was at her happiest when one of the grandchildren would come spend a few days. When she knew the grandkids would be there, she would make sure to have cookies prepared or would take the time to make cookies with them. Before retirement, Esther trained and worked as a registered nurse, primarily in the Home Health Care field. The patients she cared for made a lasting impression on her and she found much reward in being their nurse. Esther spent many years growing vegetable gardens to provide for her family but in later years she found much pleasure in flower gardening. She especially loved irises but there wasn’t a flower that she didn’t like. God blessed her with a tremendous green thumb; so much so that people would give her half-dead plants and somehow, she would bring them back to thriving life. Esther also loved bird watching and was always excited about getting another birdfeeder and believed that everyone should set up bluebird houses. There were so many things that she enjoyed and loved but none more than her husband, Paul. She felt so blessed to have a life of being his wife. In the last sixty-three years, they received many blessings, faced a terminal cancer diagnosis, witnessed healing miracles, raised children, rejoiced in good times, and walked through the hard times. There were many scriptures that she lived by and that she and Paul instilled in their children but the scripture that summarized how she felt is 3 John 1:4, “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.”

Esther will be greatly missed by family and friends.  She is survived by her husband of sixty-three years, Paul Walters of East Point, Kentucky; daughters, Sally (Paul) Spite of Chesterton, Indiana, Charleen (Kenneth) Williams of St Petersburg, Florida, Betsy (Kenneth) Smith of Salisbury, North Carolina, Kristine (Marlin) Jones of Greenacres, Florida, Cynthia Shank of Niles; son, D. Paul (Jeri) Walters of Buchanan; twenty-three grandchildren; forty-six great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren; sister, Martha Brantley of South Bend, Indiana; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughters, Kathy Rhoades, Mary Beth Forbes; granddaughter, Candace Walters; great granddaughters, Madison Rhoades, Lauren Rhoades; son-in-law, Kenneth Smith; sister, Elsie Howell; brothers, Paul Eugene Deckard, and Charles David Deckard,
