Ed Smith Obituary

George Edward “Ed” Smith, 79, of Cassopolis, died peacefully Thursday, June 6, 2025, at home surrounded by family.

His life began February 13, 1946, in Niles, Michigan, he was the eldest of five children born to George and Barbara Smith.  He married Terrie on January 5, 1996, in Centreville, Michigan.

Ed was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was his happiest when surrounded by family. When not with his family and helping with projects, he was on his tractor working around his home and in the fields. Ed will always be remembered for his smile and sage advice. He was kind hearted and always willing to help others whenever needed. He will be missed dearly.

Ed is survived by his wife of twenty-nine years, Terrie Smith of Cassopolis; one daughter, Melissa (Randy) Troyer of LaGrange, Indiana; four sons, Paul (Jennifer) Smith of Howe, Indiana, Kenneth Smith of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Jared (Elizabeth) Smith of Galesburg, Rock (Jessica) Ruthsatz of Saugatuck; fifteen grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one sister, Kathryn Dockerty of Dowagiac; three brothers, Warren (Millie) Smith, John (Eileen) Smith, Harold (Deb) Smith, all of Cassopolis; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Barbara; great granddaughter, September Rose; and brother-in-law, Ken Dockerty.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate Ed’s life at his residence Saturday, June 28, 2025 from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m.
