Debra Jane Mathews, 62, of Buchanan, died, Friday, January 26, 2024.
Her life began July 13, 1961, in Flint, Michigan, the middle of three children born to Ronald and Pamela Verrette.
Debra held a grand love for her family. She cherished giving her grandchildren gifts and sweets. She was a passionate teacher of special needs students; she loved working in childcare and education. She enjoyed volunteering around her local community, wherever she lived, from clothing donations to food drives. Debra poured her heart and soul into others. She loved and meticulously tended her garden, always cutting fresh flowers for her table every week. She was an avid boy scout leader; always camping, building derby cars, and learning about nature. She was an avid reader who enjoyed the library tremendously.
Debra will be greatly missed by family and friends. She is survived by two daughters, Misty (Christopher) Riley of Cedar Hill, Tennessee, Gabrielle Mathews of Harbert; one son, Matthew Ranney of Mt. Morris; one stepson, Stephen Mathews of Davison; five grandchildren, Lily, Sophie, Mary Grace, Marcy, and Kayson; one sister, Wendy (Matt) Carr of Grand Blanc; one brother, Gary (Rene) Verrette of Linden; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
The family will observe a private remembrance.
The family prefers contributions in memory of Debra be made to Buchanan District Library, 128 East Front Street, Buchanan, Michigan 49107.
